about

Recorded on location in New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Maryland in May 2016.

I toured the East Coast of America with Gets Worse (plus Weekend Nachos and The Afternoon Gentlemen), during which time I made a few glitchy, strange, noisy 'field' recordings on my phone of street sounds, public transport, venue noise and the gig we played in St. Vitus Bar in New York.

These recording languished for just under 4 years in the 'Sounds From US Tour To Go Through' folder until April 1st 2020, when I finally started going through them, finding interesting bits, looking for weird rhythms and sounds.

released April 8, 2020

This has been a tough one, in this 5 Releases in 5 Days Challenge that I set myself. Even on the morning of the 8th, I didn't have a full release, no set song titles or running order, just an hour's collection of unmatched sounds that I wasn't feeling totally happy with, and wondered if I would make this in time for the 8pm deadline I had given for this one.

After 7 more hours on the day, pulling every piece apart and re-assembling with many changes, then sorting the aesthetic too, I think it feels like an intense and scatty sounding, interesting but challenging album, completed (upload and images and text) at 7.56pm!

I am pleased with this, sonically and what it represents in my clearing out of old recordings, seeing what I can coherently piece together.

Tracks 1-8 were originally a really noisy unlistenable 55 minute recording of the set up, crowd noise, soundcheck, set itself (track 7) and bustle of the crowd again at the Gets Worse gig in New York, condensed initially to 5 minutes, then smashed, bashed, crashed and mashed until it hits the 9 minute mark. In the spirit of grindcore (and making up silly titles), I chopped them into smaller chunks.

Tracks 9-15 are roaming sound grabs, expanded on. I hope you have a listen inside the sounds as there is a lot going on!

Track 16 is Mick from Gents singing a love song.

Enjoy.
