#19 - Improvised Collaboration

by The Owl & Tomáš Homolík

/
1.
A little bit of an intro made from what I did before Tomáš arrived at Futra.
2.
I accidentally played a Cradle Of Filth riff during this. I only realised once I checked the recording a couple of weeks later... and the grind band Impulsealer jam in Futra's rehearsal space. This is why this is the title (based on a line from the Cradle Of Filth song!).
3.
I was tempted to make that 'om' harmony last for a few minutes.. What a beautiful sound.
4.
I mean, just because something doesn't make sense straight away, doesn't mean it's not worth sticking around to see if things fall into place later, right?
5.
Even if there's no music on! Trust me. This was going to be called 'The Mosh Song'. The slow downs and speeds up and rock out parts bring me great joy!
6.
Poetic feedback noise loops.
7.
Underwater? Hurtling through space? Beyond infinity? Into a place where riffs and rhythms sound like they are going backwards.
8.
I was very tempted to make THAT riff go on for about 5 minutes! Really pleased with how odd that start is too! Weird sounds are the best.
9.
It's fair to say that Tom Jenkinson is a massive influence on me.
10.
More suggestions for what is said at the start are welcome...! Really happy with loads of the ideas and progressions of this song.
11.
Endless brilliant drum rolls!
12.
Something of a collage of a few little bits near the end of the jam. Interesting ideas leading into that final loop. I could have given it some sort of pretentious poetic title, but sometimes the working title that reminds you what it is is just as good!
13.
Hope you enjoyed this weird and wonderful collaboration between The Owl and Tomáš Homolík.

Improvised on 27/7/20 at Klub Futra, Orlová, Czech Republic.

Glitch noise layers and riff / rhythm reconstruction by The Owl during August (18-31) 2020. All sounds are made from the session.

I placed the microphone in the wrong part of the room to pick up the bass fully, so the post-EQ and resulting sound work to balance the levels a bit is maybe a little odd for most people's ears, but it ended up leading to something I think is still interesting and quite different at least, which is always the main purpose of any improvisations and experiments that I do on my own or collaborations with others.

It was fun to do, as a first time playing with the mightily talented drummer Tomáš, and then a fun and big challenge to smash it apart and put it back together again into, what I feel anyway, is a coherent and unique album.

At this point in my musical journey, it is as much about the challenge of sound manipulation, as it is the riffs and the unexpected rhythms and ideas that are found along the way. I know this sound is not like the others. That is increasingly becoming my need with every release.
