This was originally called 'The Hurricane Swirling Inside The Black Hole Through The Portal To The End Of Everything', which is pretty damn epic, but, I decided to change it. The new title refers to the black hole in the centre of the Messier M87 galaxy. It has been given the name 'Pōwehi', which is Hawai'ian for 'embellished dark source of unending creation' from an 18th-century Hawaiian chant called the Kumulipo.

about

Original live improvised bass jam: August 13th 2019

This album is about the correlation between how infinite the universe is and how infinite your own mind is, if you are open to the idea and know how to travel within it. The more that both are explored and understood, the wider the possibilities and the more there is to continue to explore, and to be truly amazed by.

No restructuring, this is exactly as I played it, just mixed and with extra layers added, so, please bear in mind this is live and improvised. Everything added is made only from the original recording (aside from the Alan Watts sample).

Work was done on this on many different occasions over the last 2 years, quite a bit whilst making Odyssey One during 2020, but most of it was done in February and then heavily throughout May 2021. It serves as a continuation of Further Into The Vastness, but also uses some production ideas gained from Hibernation, so it feels like it sits in the same classroom as all those releases.

So, I hope you will close your eyes and let me soundtrack and guide your mindtrip for a little while.

"#55 is absolutely mind bendingly / meltingly / disorientatingly good.
This isn't a release that you would blast on the car stereo with the windows down while you and 3 mates are heading to a gig. This, like all The Owl releases, is a personal one, so personal in fact that I feel it could have been written specifically for me.
Like all great pieces of music / soundscapes 'Beyond...' is open to interpretation, and the fact that my interpretation of it changes with each listen is a tribute to how this has been created / layered / arranged.
My favourite release of the year;
Drone / doom / ambient masterclass."
-> John Cook, Sound Connoisseur

///

'Metaphysical journey into our minds with its blend of drone, harsh noise, psych, dark ambient and sludge'
'an audio journey, you don't simply listen to it, you experience it'
'sound is so expansive that it's almost hard to wrap your head around'
'The duality of light and airy and harsh and heavy is one of many elements that makes this album so captivating'
'Clear around 35 minutes of your time, make sure you are alone and experience this album in full. I guarantee that it will be a worthwhile experience.
-> James Sweetlove, Cave Dweller Music

///

"...ever-prolific noisemaker continues the momentum built by previous releases Odyssey One, Hibernation and Further Into The Vastness'
'simple yet mind-expanding opener'
'closer Pōwehi is a throbbing, rhythmic beast... a low-end collage of maddening sounds, glitches and just generally hellish bass'
'We all have creativity within us, but some people are better at using it than others. The Owl’s productivity and vision is a prime example of that'
-> James Williams, This Noise Is Ours

///

"Once again The Owl has produced a quite sublime record that goes far beyond the reaches of the doom and drone metal. Does it live up to the ambition of the title? Damn right it does!
The Owl's records... designed to overwhelm the senses with a touch of comic absurdity amongst the severity.
'peaks and troughs in a remarkably dynamic way, brutally intense...' 'Transcending'.. haunting, meditative, striking.
'Hymn' ... levels of sub bass almost destructive and quite uncomfortable...sounding like the interior of an imploding star.
-> Will Johnson, Wolves In The Drone Doom
