#78 - Paths Of The Past

by The Owl

/
1.
Corridor 01:20
An enchanting trance, an entrance and an exit.
2.
Freak since the first day; 4.5 decades later I am grateful for the wonky brain I have, as every difficult, challenging, life threatening moment led me to this point in my life right now, which I would not change for anything! This 15 minute track hopefully reflects that journey.
3.
I was going to make this a 'noiseless' album, in that there would be no extra 'fizz' added, no layers of distortion, but, I think it adds to the disturbing nature of this record. Also, especially once I had it in mind that I wanted to send it to Death To Dynamics, a few extra layers of noise and crunch definitely seemed appropriate.
4.
All the other tracks on this album were made using a new technique I figured out for creating sounds, which is something I got engrossed in for a couple of weeks, and there are 4 other complete albums of a similar style to come in the next two months. As always though, there is something that breaks the mold, or, at least sits in the mold for a little while and then gets up, sticks two fingers up to it and walks away. This is that track.
5.
I walked past these great angles almost every day for about 10 years going to and from work, almost always going by in the morning in very blurry states after long insomnia, depression, alcoholic or generally stressed out times.
6.
An exit and an entrance to a new dimension.

about

46 minute, minimal, lo-fi, drone dark ambient album with flickering, fuzzy noise layers to lose your mind inside.

All sounds originally from my archive; deformed beyond recognition.
Made in one day, June 8th 2022 for Death To Dynamics.
All photos taken by The Owl in a past life.

I lived in Leeds for nearly 45 years until November 2021. It is a constantly astonishing city, with truly inspiring, nice, creative people and one of the best, more forward thinking, challenging, inventive music scenes there will ever be across virtually all the genres, and it definitely helped shape my existence in so many ways.

Paths Of The Past is the first of a series of much more stripped back, minimal drone / dark / ambient albums, that will help me lay parts of my past to rest, good and difficult, using pictures I have taken in and around Leeds, dating back throughout a couple of decades.

For me, the sounds and then subsequently the titles are telling a story of 'how the past feels' once growing distant from it.

For those new to The Owl story, I now live and am married in Czech, and the release of this is a day after I was given my Czech ID card for long-term residency, so it has felt doubly apt to kick off this series of albums now. Delving back inside some of my past times here and there will hopefully help me even more in the future, now that I can see them from a literal and metaphorical distance.

released June 16, 2022

Death To Dynamics is an incredible label full of 'harsh / noise / wall', but also a good amount of sounds that get darker, more drone, some ambient and experimental, so if that is your sonic world (I hope it is since you are here!), I heartily recommend you explore the whole catalogue. It is ran by Tom (The Night Porter) who is a super chap, so, go get listening and supporting.

Thank you for checking this album out.
