Captain Beefheart 'Trout Mask Replica' tribute compilation.
"A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast 'n' bulbous, got me?"
I've been a long time fan (thanks to John Peel and following on finding out about Frank Zappa's music and projects) ever since hearing this album in the early 90s, and the story about handing the drummer a tape of Beefheart and his wife washing up and telling him to learn it!
The mix of crazy music, weird patterns, inventive sounds and downright ridiculous processes always appealed, so I guess I was always destined to end up playing and making odd and challenging music.
It's a shame some of the stories go a little far about his treatment of the musicians involved, but he was clearly insane, beyond the usual form of driven, and probably thought in some way he was doing them a favour by pushing them to the extremes to make the extreme sounds they were.
In making a remix, you end up hearing the original song entirely differently. I really climb inside the sounds to see what I can pull out of them, and then see where I can go with that one particular bit, and this one unearthed all sorts that I hadn't fully spotted on many previous listens.
So, I hope you will listen to what is essentially a 7.5 minute restructuring and warped extension of the original, and of course, I had to have a play with the original cover as well!
