I decided to move the 'thanks / influences' for this track into the main text, as it felt important to shout for those artists. I hope you will trust me and climb inside these sounds.

about

Hello, and welcome to another Owl experiment in sound.

It is released on the 24th anniversary of Mule Variations by Tom Waits being released; the album with the inspirational 'What's He Building?'. I still remember seeing the video played on a late night music program for the first time. Incredible and impactful track from a masterful album.

Inspired by over 40 years of obsessively listening to music, and the desire to push my music into more abstract and unpredictable territories, whilst still attempting to retain something listenable, catchy, meaningful, euphoric and cathartic by the end.

'Dark Abstract Dungeon Ambient </Playful Experimental Noise Synth\> Warped Atmospheric Tricky Trip', right to the last second.

Thank you as always for joining me in the sonic bunker. I appreciate anyone who sits down in the room with me, takes their shoes off, gets comfy and puts this in their ears.

Assembled between June 14th and December 14th 2022, using synth, voice, guitar, bass, effects pedals, piano, field recordings captured on Zoom H1 and phone. Arranged, mixed and mastered on Reaper and Wavepad with a whole host of important plug-ins.

The origins of sounds are from a few different styles of improvised jams, edited and arranged until all the parts in separate folders seemed to become sentient and aware of each other, magnetising to the individual components at weird angles to form 'Tinker' (the work in progress title).

That led me to thinking about a human in a bunker in the middle of nowhere hammering and gluing various sounds together to eventually form this one seemingly disjointed but hopefully quite beautiful mass, which led me to think of 'What's He Building', the specific release date of April 16th, the new title and the accompanying artwork.

Thanks to Lorenzo Abattoir and Martin Režný (Säkkikangas) for the inspiration for how the final track begins and develops; The Aphex Twin and Squarepusher for showing me in the 90s how weird but catchy electronic music can be ('Bucephalus Bouncing Ball' inspired the rhythms of the closer), and (of course) Godspeed You! Black Emperor for perfecting the art of the endlessly climbing cacophony that really helped shape what that last piece does.

All the images taken and layout done by me. The only thing that isn't mine is the font, which is called Tom's Handwriting. Given the title, this one had to be used!

Inspired by and also released on the lovely and fantastic <1 / Less Than One page, to where I have contributed plenty of tracks for compilations over the last couple of years. Tons of interesting experimentalism going on here: lessthanone.bandcamp.com

As always, thank YOU for joining me on this journey.
