about

It's taken me exactly one year to get up the courage to release this. I archived it in the 'Albums Unlikely To Release' folder for a while.

Maybe it's a silly idea to put it out there, but I have actively pushed myself to remember that this page is also my diary, and it has helped me overcome all sorts of terrible times in my brain, as well as aided my incessant creative impulses.

The last 6 months have been really difficult, lacking confidence for releasing things. What became easy to do was lost. I overthink and I try and do too much to share what I make everywhere, and it has become exhausting, distracted me from the catharsis of hitting publish, and tied me up in knots, so with the release of this album that took me one hour to record the music of, that I'm not going to do shouting about elsewhere, I am trying to turn the corner again to just 'do' again.

Below is the story of how this came to be. I still think it is interesting, and there are good ideas in this mixed bag of lofi and absolutely raw sounds. As always, thank you to anyone who indulges me for a little while in having a read and letting this play.

This text was written on the day the sounds were created....

"This album came as a result of discovering 'pure xprezion' on Twitter and Bandcamp; a page saying 'Join our community of improvised music with lofi production. For experimental artists who are recording their tracks with the phone, without mixing and mastering'.

I was of course intrigued and up for making something for this project, which is the first track, and then I wandered around the room, recording myself making up sounds along the way.

Recorded on my phone in one unexpected improvising hour, arranged with titles and artwork all on October 12th 2022; a day I wasn't feeling well at all; using piano, Arturia synth (through small speaker into phone), 4 & 5 string basses (no amplification or pedals), Monotron Delay, tambourine, radiator, yoga ball and a money box.

All I did afterwards is edit beginnings and ends to create separate tracks, and make the volumes level. Nothing has been edited within each piece; no layers, no loops, no effects, no EQ.

I hope you will indulge me in listening to it with all this in mind (preferably with headphones, to really feel like you are in the room with me; clicks, mistakes, the high string on one bass being out of tune (it's kinda cute sounding!), all the imperfections!), and enjoy the free feel and expression. I am happy with the story attributed to it.

I'd like to think I will do more of these for sure, but every time I think 'This is Part 1 of many in a series and style', it never goes further, because I am very much a 'let's see what else I can do' soundmaker. I was very tempted to set up a different Bandcamp for 'impulsesandindulgences', to release more of my raw jams, rehearsals, improvisations. It may happen. It may not. There are still many years (decades! hopefully) left of this audio visual journey (and how many rambles there will be, I can't begin to imagine!), so, thank you to those who see this and still stick around...!"

Unfortunately it seems that the pure xprezion project is abandoned, with inactivity since mid October last year, but, still, go check out what tukahdus, blacksunhighdesert and guide sick made for it.
