#80 - HEADCLANK!

by The Owl

/
1.
Original sound source from a jam just after buying my first guitar at the end of 2021. You can hear me figuring out the notes at the end of track 2. This was originally just single notes, played acoustically, and then stretched, layered and distorted into something entirely different.
2.
🔊OWL80.2 - Black metal ideas I was playing with a few months ago. HEADCLANK! may be my solution to getting more riffs and ideas out there, as I have made hundreds, maybe thousands of these little recordings on my phone over the years, and done very little with any of them (aside from some eventually making it into the bands I was with at the times). There will always be a twist! I hope you enjoy it when it gets there!
3.
This South Park section was definitely made to be used by a noisenik, so, here it is!
4.
Original sound source - The test signal sirens going off in the street outside, and me getting frustrated by them going on for a long time. Original picture taken of me sometime maybe around 2009, I think in Manchester Airport. I am stood under a phone that was a free call to the Samaritans (or another Mental Health / Suicide Hotline). The image ended up in high contrast black and white because I was considering using it for a Morbid Beauty album cover or track, but I think it works perfectly here. The second half of this track was the last change I made on the album, and I laughed for about 10 minutes after finishing off the off kilter clicky rhythm go into that waltz time section. Things like this make me very happy, and I realised this album was complete at that moment.
5.
Original sound source is the wonderous Adventure Time. 'Waking Dream Demons sit on top of rocks on the mountain and terrorize people such as the group of weekend survivalists by giving them daymares.' All sounds are made from that one section of the animation, no additional noises, erm, added. For a list of all the characters mentioned in this track, look here: https://adventuretime.fandom.com/wiki/Wild_Trap_Mountain
6.
Original sound sources are general outside world ambience whilst out walking, cars going past and nature, with some weird guitar playings sped up and made to sound like an actual song was intentional. This song has nothing to do with Taylor Swift, but, I put 'Swift Street Song' into Google, and all the results were for 'Cornelia Street' by her, which I've still never heard. I can't say I am fan, but, I thought I'd see if any interesting images came up to go with the track anyway, and this picture is really mega cool, so, it had to stay!
7.
Original title 'The Lone Wenceslas Square Drum Squadron'. This was a street busker playing pots, pans and buckets in Anděl, Prague, plus of course, the general hustle and bustle of the surrounding people, transport, sirens.
8.
Original sound source is a quote from the very excellent Dead Poets Society, by the even more excellent Robin Williams. The sentiment in this quote is immense, and so I had to find an image related to the film. The tagline on it is perfect for the sample and as general encouragement for anyone reading this.
9.
Originally called Štěpán's Crunchy Textures 'How did you go from calling this Štěpán's Crunchy Textures to The First Martyr, and who is Štěpán?', you may ask yourself, well, me! 'Well' I answer with a sneaky smile on my face... 'it's not a who, it's a where!' Svaty Stepan is a really small town in Zlínský Kraj, Czech, where I visited with my wife and some of her family in December 2021, and this is where I made the initial snowy field recording, of us both walking on snow. On searching 'Svaty Stepan' in Google to work on the picture and text to go with this track, I discovered that there was a Svatý Štěpán (Saint Stephen), who was 'a Christian preacher and deacon, the first martyr of Christianity, stoned after the trial before the Jewish Council as an alleged blasphemer against Judaism.' https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svat%C3%BD_%C5%A0t%C4%9Bp%C3%A1n Thank you for attending this particular lesson at The Owl Academy. Many more random nuggets of information will be coming your way soon. I appreciate those who stick around.
10.
Original sound source; I'm not entirely sure. There was 30 seconds of weird noises, but, the file was named something like 'Voice 33.m4a', and I couldn't place it from the date about 6 months previously what it was or where it was from, but, it sounded interesting, so I made this from it, because, you can get ideas and inspiration from absolutely anything, if you give yourself the opportunity to do so.
11.
Original titles 'Birds Vs Dogs' and 'Queedle And Yip Yip'. Original sound source is the noise of birds and dogs outside where I live.
12.
Original title 'Waltz Of The Weird Peiexocx'. A few of us went for a walk around the next town along from where we live, Karviná, and in one of the parks there were peacocks. They are weird, and make strange noises, so, of course I recorded some of it and made it into a harsh noise waltz with a little abstract techno break.
13.
Original sound source is the printer in the office at Klub Futra, and it is the sound of printing gig posters to distribute around the venue and the area. I was really happy when I found the meme used for the image here!
14.
Scram 03:25
Original sound source, another guitar jam made around the start of 2022. It is called 'Scram' because I initially had in mind to try and play some sort of screamo hardcore song / chords / styles of riffs. Not sure how successful that was, but I really do like this track. Maybe one day it will get recorded with drums and vocals, but for now, here is my expansion of a little guitar sketch, complete with about 10 extra layers of harmonies... ...and of course, there's always a twist! Thanks to those who got this far in the album, and get to enjoy, laugh at, be annoyed by, whatever it is you respond with, at what happens in this track!
15.
Another incredible Robin Williams quote, this time from an interview I found on YouTube that I couldn't find again once I started work on this album! The title is a pipe dream, because money, power, greed and religion exist, but maybe if enough people say it, it might eventually happen.

about

During May I decided It was time to stop storing and start using sounds from my 'bits n pieces' folders and so, with this 15 track 27 minute album, a new series called HEADCLANK! is born.

Interesting noises from the outside and inside world, TV series and film quotes, guitar and bass jams and riff sketches have been worked through on this album of experimental and abstract sounds; structured but unpredictable, loud/quiet/fast/slow as per my usual blueprints.

This series gives me the possibility of playing with ideas in a much quicker way than I have for some time, although I still ended up taking a while over getting things as correct and ready as I could in the end.

Original sounds from all manner of places from October 2021 to April 2022, made into an album between May 2nd and 16th 2022.

Final scrutiny, some additional weirdness (especially some new loops that actually make me laugh!), mastering, imagery, text all done June 26th-28th, meaning that I could lay to rest a couple dozen of the interesting sounds I had collected, and then start working on the hundreds more dating back many years for future HEADCLANK!s.

For those who like to get right inside the sounds and get more knowledge about them and my creative process in putting an album together, look in the 'Lyrics' part of each track. There are further explanations of where the sounds came from, why the titles are what they are, and why the pictures that go along with them were chosen.

The randomly found cover image and album title came first. It just seemed so unbelievably suitable for The Owl and then for this, and shaped the sound and speedy impact and nature of the release.

This was a total 'en masse ideas purge' and chance to relax, play, enjoy, almost literally mess about with interesting sounds, and see how far I could stretch and smash and bash and wallop them into different shapes, but then still try and form them into 'songs' (of sorts!) and give them (hopefully) some intriguing concepts and sonic directions.

I hope you enjoy this initially in the quite lighthearted fashion it is intended (I mean, come on, it starts with a dark ambient track into a black metal track minus drums and vocals, followed by a South Park sample that seemed destined to end up on a noise record), but, please listen close as I think there are lots of weird, intense, warped and wonderful ideas (WIWAWI) in there, that go beyond the realms of just wayward chaos, especially if you take the imagery and adjoining text into consideration. I hope you will.

I still like to have structure in my music, no matter how abstract it can get at times. It comes from playing riffs in metal and extreme bands for decades, but, I am definitely striving to make those structures and formats as bizarre, progressive and mindbending as possible, combined with some silly noises as well.

Thank you for listening to, and reading my stereotypically lengthy account of HEADCLANK!
