#116 - Live In Brno Noise Fest 18.3.23

by The Owl

/
1.
Two no-input recordings mashed together, recorded the weekend after Noise Fest and directly influenced by the day and watching the other performers. Made in Klub Futra, Orlová 25.3.23
2.
Live 'set' in the kitchen where me and Blanka stayed for the weekend of the festival (and another gig the night before); made using their coffee machine amplified 2800%. Features blurred conversation and the Enslaved's 'Heimdal' album faintly coming from the room next door. Zoom H1 recorders are brilliant!
3.
Go! GO! (to the next track to read about the technical difficulties!) Guest vocal from Viki of Furuburasuto who guided me through the traumas!
4.
(Thanks to Viki for the picture I then played around with to make this 'track image') My Orange amp died during soundcheck, so I had to run off and ask around and borrowed from the bass player of Sloth. The electrics blew a few times over the course of the day (and during soundcheck) so I think the insane amount of extension cables running all over the venue since every artist on the bill had set up all their gear overloaded everything. Either way, my amp is still dead. My pedals started making horrendous buzz and hum noises (you can hear them in the set recording, so all I could do was try and utilise them for layers of noise). I tried switching leads and a few other things, but to no avail. There were problems setting up the projections, the screen, several laptops were used. Eventually the film I brought could be projected onto a screen. So, I was a total wreck when the set started, and it didn't go in the direction I had kinda imagined beforehand, BUT, it was loud, and it was cathartic, and well received (the cheers at the end shocked me!), and this was still a huge pleasure and honour to be included here, as the line up was really full of heavyweights, from a lot of different countries as well, so, what an experience. Thank you for reliving this with me.

about

I was honourably invited to play at Brno Noise Fest in March 2023, by Obstik of the fantastic Usnu? project, and here is the resulting album.

'Signals' was recorded a few days after, whilst still in 'live noise mode' and is two no-input jams mashed together.

'Stimulants' is a live coffee-making recording with special guests Blanka, Pavel and Enslaved.

'Technical' is the final nod to being able to start after a whole host of problems in the set up. You can read more about that (and the making of the other tracks) in the 'Lyrics' tabs.

The 4th track is the whole set, and hopefully reading about the problems puts it into context a little, and it goes on a weird, wild, wayward, loud, crunchy, swirly, psychedelic journey.

It's just me, my bass (5 string Ibanez GSR200) and effects pedals (EHX Nanopog Octave, Boss ODB-3 Overdrive, DigiTech Death Metal, DigiTech X-Series Delay & Reverse) and a borrowed Orange amp (after mine died in soundcheck).

The set accompanied by the film I used for the backdrop (a collage of many short films and animations with extra editing). Play it loud, watch it whole as large as you can, in a dark room for full effect. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZVG93oxvKE

To be honest, this one almost borders on Morbid Beauty style of crunchy, mid to low heavier noise, due to the nature of the gig and the line up, my feelings at that moment, and the Zoom H1 recorder being pretty close to the cab even recording only on either 15 or 20%, not sure which, but usually the level I have it to (try to) avoid distortion.

Having the nightmare time and opening up that truly heavyweight line up of noise and experimental people was a real test for me. It was 2 weeks until I could bring myself to listen back to this recording, and in the end I am actually pleased with how I held myself up, and brought in something also different and Owl-ish.

It was all improvised. I did have ideas, preconceptions I guess, as to how things would go and what I was hoping to try, but it didn't materialise. However, what actually happened was probably more suitable for the event, the time I played, and how my slice of noise fit in with the rest of the day, so I can now feel happy about putting it out there... with the few extra things that I feel are related.

Thank you to:
Obstik for asking me to play and general awesomeness
Viki for photo, sage advice and sonic control
The bassist of Sloth for last minute amp loan
Blanka for everything always
Pavel and his sister for 2 days of crash space
Marko Quatrefoil who traveled from Croatia to say hello! (Not just that, of course, P.S. listen to The Owl & Quatrefoil split - OWL114)
The many who helped during set up!
Everyone who watched and the whole line up for a stunning day of NOISE that I still feel proud to have been included in.
