about

Everything made with bass and voice.
Earliest sounds made December 31st 2018. The rest made and constructed between February 6th and May 27th 2021.

///

- 'Equilibrium' is just made with my voice.

- 'Mountain' is made from one bass note, voice, and a lot of sessions working on it over the course of around 4 months.

- 'Fire' is me whistling, vocal hums and some looped bass delays recorded the last day of 2018. I am so pleased with how this piece resolves.

- 'Embers' is made from a 2 second snip of 'Equilibrium' to tie the whole thing together.

Of course, there has been a hefty amount of manipulation to create this from that.

This album is meant as a follow on to OWL44: 'The Recluse'.

The basics of work on Track 2 and 3 were started around the same time as 'The Recluse', in the first half of February 2021, but I struggled to envision how they were all going to end up until May 18th, when I finished some other works, cleared my mind and decided this was going to be the release for Default Standard Records.

That's when the various sections all came together, and I felt able to tackle all the mental blocks I had with them to make them sound more how I wanted, and now I am immensely happy with the outcome. It feels like a pretty powerful beast but with some beautiful deep vibrations and hypnotising subtle melodies and rhythms.

So, I would like to thank the most awesome Dimitris at Default Standard for asking me to do this, which pushed myself and these sounds as much as I was able, to inspire how this turned out.

THE STORY BEHIND 'THE PROCESSION'

'The Procession' is about the struggles and battles (literally, mentally, in society and politics) that people around and before the 1920s faced, but that they still had the glimmers and visions of hope for liberation and freedom that kept them going, hence the images of artistic female form and the march for the women's vote (images are in the download / on each track's page), which signals progression even in the tougher, unemancipated times.

They were also used because, whilst sexual liberation and the general feeling of freeness in life was a lot more hidden or frowned upon around then and previously, it was still there, you just had to look closer, or appreciate any little bit of it that you could get. If we look at how things are in a lot of societies a full 100 years later, we are incredibly more liberated and 'free' in a lot of respects, far moreso than we think in comparison to those days.

Obviously this doesn't apply everywhere, unfortunately, and there are still battles in the world that are archaic, inhumane, barbaric and simply shouldn't still be happening this far into the human race's evolution. It is setting the progression and community of the world and its people back, so, looking at those days and what was achieved, it is a reminder to keep on fighting to get things at least as balanced as possible. It might be slow (akin to the slow movement of the sounds), and it might feel that if victory is gained it may be pyrrhic, but you won't know about the positives, the helpful people, good information and directions you can venture across if you don't try.

Musically all this ties in with the fact that, in the example of the two very long pieces in the middle, there are many many layers of bass heavy vibrations, ambient hums and echoes to the sides and swirling over the top, and some of the layers are virtually inaudible, but it doesn't mean they aren't there. The further inside you can look and listen, to this music, to that era, to any given situation, the more you can find that you didn't realise was there on first inspection.

In 'The Mountain Ahead', there are moments of advancing brightness amongst the doom, the heavy going bass rumbles, followed by a change in direction. Sometimes you don't even realise that change has already happened before that, when you are focusing on the now, but, musically and thematically, this record deals with the slow, steady, strong building of foundations that are the best way to approach making fundamental changes to the ills in society, and to the enslavement and mistreatment of other sentient beings, be they human or animal.

It really does all start with the self. If you think you can't change the world, don't worry about that, otherwise you end up so overwhelmed you can't do anything. If you think there is something you need to change in you, then that is possible, and in that sense, you have made a difference. If you can constantly live your life making these little changes, progressions, improvements, you never know how far that effect can travel through other people and their journey, and from them outwards even further. One idea or one nice thought can multiply, so, it is always worth the time, effort, energy to do these things.

As always, thank you for joining me on this journey, and many thanks for reading the story of this release.
