#66 - Chemistry And Composition Part 1

by The Owl & Gareth Hodgson

/
1.
This sounds like a Wolves In The Throne Room song title! Hopefully by the power of suggestion means that you will close your eyes and drift away into the music...
2.
If you want to know / a reminder where the other euphoric mammoth is, see OWL60...
3.
Classic slam riff in this one, but in a lo-fi bass and drums style! I am pretty sure nobody has mixed slam, sludge and glitch noise together in a song before. Let me know if they have! ...because life doesn't have to be serious! 'Have a dance every day, it's good for you'.
4.
Diascorium talked on numerous occasions about setting up a 'functions / weddings band' and calling it Disco Rum. It's a shame that never happened, at least just because the name is funny!
5.
...because Diascorium once supported Keelhaul, we are both big fans of Keelhaul and this one reminds me of Keelhaul.
6.
OWL66 Track 6 666 seconds Me and Gaz are both fans of Iceland, and general adventuring, so, to combine Owl and AFOS (A Forest Of Stars, his main band) into one new word 'Owlfossian' seemed rather logical, especially given how much goes on in this one throughout its course. I hope you will give it a listen... it goes from techno to noise rock to doom to black metal to noise and dark ambient over the 666 seconds!
7.
1000 bonus points to anyone who can decipher what this song title is referring to. Clue: One section of this reminds me of a song by a band that both me and Gaz love, and the title is based on that song.... You've only got about 100 billion songs to choose from, so it should be pretty easy now.

released March 2, 2022

As said on the jam with Dan Clarke... 'This release is a mix of deliberately obvious practice room jamming sound, recorded on one mic to put you right there in the room with us, just hanging out and seeing where the sounds take us, and a multi layered, processed and restructured sonic adventure to bend the reality you were previously placed within.'

Me and Gaz have played together since around 2009 when Diascorium began, playing extremely technical metal, followed by Narayana playing grindy black metal. Between the two bands, we played around 100 gigs, plus of course hundreds of rehearsals as well (breaking off from fast technical stuff to jam stupid slam riffs and Primus inspired nonsense, which should explain track 3!).

There are a couple of EPs of each band here, (and if anyone wants Bandcamp codes to add these to their collections, please message)...

We hadn't played together since the last Narayana gig around November 2019, so it was cool (on a mega hot day!) getting back in a room and seeing where the riffs and rhythms went, as we've always been pretty locked solid as a drum and bass unit. Then, of course, it's always fun seeing what I can create and build on with those sounds afterwards. These two factors gave me the album title.

Hopefully one day we'll be able to improvise live in a studio, with an engineer and get much better original source material, but once you put aside the 'practice room / demo' style sound that this has at times, and can just go with its flow, I think there will be some surprises for you. Really pleased with what came from the day, and there is a second part to this recording being worked on as well.

Artwork is all taken from an animation called 'Man And Safety', which is a seemingly disparate visual to apply to the sounds. It was made for the United States Air Force Department of Defense in 1984, and 'explains how communications, physical limitations, physiological limitations and supervision relate to the role of human limitations in accidents'. It may be a stretch, but I can definitely apply that to playing in extreme metal bands in a potentially abstract but 'oh yeah that makes sense' kind of fashion.

It is a pretty surreal trip to be honest, and, don't ask me how exactly, but, I discovered that it sync'd up really well with the sounds in a huge amount of places, so, I have made a full video for this album using 'Man And Safety', and all the imagery for the tracks, titles and credits (all in the download) have come from this animation.
