#67 - Finding Beauty In The Broken

by The Owl

1.
Meditate.

'...From The Past and How To Make It All Alright' This tells a story of dealing with mental health issues over the course of a lifetime. Imagine this being told from the perspective of someone who is 92 years old, and each minute represents a decade. The piece plots the sanity levels and the control that the person has on their own brain at each stage. Try to imagine the whole history of everything as you know it, condensed into this track, played by an orchestra.

Delicate ripples in the lake...

I am writing the lyrics for this release 2 years and 20 days later As I revisit these sounds properly for the first time since then I hope they play a small part in helping you through your day now you have discovered them. Made with bass, a reverse delay pedal for part 1, adding distortion pedal for part 2, 'the riff!', and Wavepad trickery.
5.
Imagine the film that has this soundtrack...
6.
Scene: Nuclear wastelands and wave signals arriving from other planets
7.
Everyone should go to Iceland at least once in their lives. A strangely magical place that helps show who you are or how to get on the path to becoming the person you want to be. A place for introspection.
8.
An epitaph about how you wish to disappear when it all gets too much I'm here hearing and writing this and you're here hear reading this because that's where we've both been I can tell you it is always more worth carrying on. Tell something, anyone, and then you can get the lift and help you need, in whatever form it is required. Something will work, I promise. Keep going!

about

When life feels overwhelming, daunting, horrifying, there are ways to find something that will luminesce just enough to see you through.

This album has had a journey. It has involved a stolen laptop, lost sounds and ideas that were remade differently, finished pieces collated from scattered bits of unhoused sounds that were languishing towards demise several times over since November 2018.

There has been countless rethinks of the art, title, running order and the concept in general to piece this all together in a coherent fashion, but, now, hopefully, after nearly 3.5 years, it can be called finished for anyone who steps in to listen to this release. I am as ever grateful to those who do, especially if you can take it in as a whole.

Specifically focused towards dark but uplifting and cathartic ambient / electronic sounds, but with a few bass and piano 'riff' moments; contemplative, experimental (but not too far out there), noisy (but not too full on), incorporating a mental health issues / look after yourself / 'give peace to your brain' / positivity theme and feel.

Sounds made between November 2018 and January 2022.
Made using bass and pedals, piano, vocals, synth and laptops.
Concept and visual worked on until March 10th 2022.
All 11 pieces of artwork and layout by The Owl.

The cover artwork represents that winding, illuminating, stormy, colourful, trecherous, beautiful journey, be it aligning with physical movement in the outside world, or a psychological and infinite trek that goes on inside your own mind.

Each art piece that accompanies the tracks (all in the download plus two extra ones you can't see on the Bandcamp), is a separate tale and moment from those travels, which pieces together to make the whole.

ORIGINS OF THE TRACKS.

1 - This was going to be previously unreleased, but I used it for the #saveukraine compilation on Kalamine Records just a few days before releasing this as it seemed very suitable. The initial parts are from a bass jam I did around 2018, expanded on with synth sounds in October 2021: kalaminerecords.bandcamp.com/album/saveukraine

2 - Excellent compilation put together by The New Emphatic on Hreám Recordings that brought in a great amount for Mind Charity. This is made from 2 seemingly disparate parts, bass for the first, piano for the second and was released October 2021: hream.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-mental-health

3 - Made for the truly awesome Midnight Radio compilations (#106 in July 2021) put together by Eisenlager, which was created at the time of making, and nearly went on to OWL63 The Ivy Castle: midnightradiocompilation.bandcamp.com/album/midnightradio-compilation-106

4 - Previously unreleased. Conceptually about sometimes giving unusual and challenging situations a chance to unfold, because they can often be the ones that bring you the most strength, the most positivity, the most direction to move forward. The resolve in the human spirit is utterly unbelievable at times, so keep on going and the catharsis that can be revealed at the end can literally change the rest of your life.
This one was an extra track when putting together OWL53 Unexpecthexpected in May 2021, and was from the same bass session that resulted in OWL2 Lost In The Vastness (and 36) in November 2018.
It is now on a Cave Dweller compilation for Mental Health Awareness:
cavedwellermusic.bandcamp.com/album/mind-over-metal-2-volume-1

5 - A remix of the mighty doom noisers Catafalque made December 2020, which was released on another big compilation here: catafalque.bandcamp.com/album/remixed

6 - Another massive compilation, this time from <1 to honour the 50th anniversary of the Roadside Picnic book in November 2021. It's amongst a hugely inspiring discography of experimental releases: lessthanone.bandcamp.com/album/-

7 - Default Standard is an absolute treasure house of ambient and experimental sounds, and I was delighted to have an album on there (OWL54 The Procession) and a track on the August 2021 compilation: defaultstandard.bandcamp.com/album/dsr-100-holy-cloud-11

8 - This was an interlude track for the second Narayana EP, one of the past bands of mine. This short piece felt like a great ending for something that had a mental health leaning, hopefully to represent the calm after the storms that can crush your mind at times. The EP with many big riffs released June 2020 is here: narayana.bandcamp.com/album/corruption
