about

Recorded between April 12th & July 18th 2019
Sat in its folder in the spirit of overthinking, until October 23rd 2019, when I finally decided it was already complete.

Bass, piano, electronics, drums, photography, logo - The Owl

It took 3 months from completing this recording to truly being confident I could 'let it go', and I hope that anyone giving this a try will listen to it in the way it is intended - Eyes shut, headphones on, darkened room, open mind.

This one was a really big turning point for The Owl and how I approached sounds and telling of stories with records. I'm not going to tell a life story here to get you up to speed on my journey, but, in the 5 or 6 years previous to this, my brain and life had been put through the smash machine, and I had come out the other side completely broken with nothing left (mentally and literally).

This was a year after the first Owl release came out, and it's from here on that I really started to focus more on this project, as I had (mostly) retired after over 25 years of gigging / touring / rehearsing bands just before this one was released.

It felt like I was placing the lid on so many things (bad and good) from previous decades, and giving me a new positive, forward thinking possibility to be able to channel most of my creative energies and needs into.

It was 5 months before I released anything else, because I had a lot of recharging to do, and a lot of thinking about what I wanted this next stage of my entire life (not just musical) to be about. OWL8 'Voyage' came out in March, and since that release, the proverbial floodgates have opened, and my energy and vigour for life and music has been rekindled to a level it has never reached before.

It is now May 2021, and I recently revisited all my old works to make the 'FIFTY' album, and, yes, I could remix this slightly to improve the sound, and there's a few little things I could have / maybe should have done differently, but, I am going to leave it as it is, because it is part of the sonic and personal journey I have made, and I am actually really damn proud of having survived through what I have, and also of the sounds I make.

They really have kept me alive all these years, and I wouldn't change the past if I had that magical opportunity, because where I am right now, all things considered, is pretty damn nice and lucky, so I am actually thankful for what I've learned from horrible and happy and weird and wonderful times in the past, and this is why I am always thankful for those who join me in this journey, because you really do make a massive difference in my life, truly, so, thank you.

///

"The journey starts off with bleak, harrowed piano tones of 'Tension...', taking you down into weird black holes of sonic pressure, tickling you with hyperactive rhythms and rumbling atmospheres, before 'Betwixt...' fires monstrous then catastrophic explosions at you from all sides, until the pivotal 'Diversion Tactics' lifts you out of the debris, dropping you into the changed, warm desert landscape of 'Howling Winds...'. You know the forthcoming path is long, and will be fraught and tense, but it teases you with a promise that everything will all be alright if you just allow yourself to continue going forward. Just let your ears and mind complete this journey, and the lifting of emotions you desire will appear at the head of the temple of the sun at the end of the road.

In short: Everything will always be alright... trust me."

Listen as one complete piece, but this has been split into 5 songs at exactly 33 minutes, 33 seconds for a reason.

'There is a motive for every movement' said David Yow, and this always applies.
